Military Working Dog Lex who was with Cpl. Dustin Jerome Lee when he was KIA in Iraq, has since been adopted to the Lee family.  This is the first time ever that a Military Working Dog was retired to a family; he was retired on 12-21-07.  MWD Lex received the Purple Heart on 2-16-08.

Please check out these wonderful shirts(like the one shown above), pet items, stickers, etc.  Part of the money spent on these items will go to the National War Dog Association.  Such an incredible cause!

Maggie K9 Police Dog retires

I came across this beautiful girl on Myspace, and I just had to pay tribute to her!  Maggie is now retired from the Oak Ridge Police Department in Tennessee.  She was injured by a crack dealer when he rammed his car into Maggie and her handler.  She is seven years old and she's a dual purpose Police K9 with over 80 grand in dope and money seizures, and six street bites!

You can find me on Myspace at:  http://www.myspace.com/sempercanum

Enjoy your retirement Maggie, you sure DESERVE it!

One year ago today American Hero's Cpl. Kory Wiens & MWD Cooper gave the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom

July 6, 2007 Cpl. Kory Wiens and MWD were KIA in Muhammed Sath, Iraq.  They are the only team(Handler and dog) to be KIA together since the War in Iraq and Afghanistan has begun.

Below, I added another video of Kory & Cooper titled, "Kory and Cooper after a long mission."  Kory referred to Cooper as, "His son."  Watch the video's of them, and you can just see the love and adoration he had for Cooper.

Always remember our Hero's because remembering keeps their memories alive!

John Burnam Monument Foundation

John Burnam, Founder of the National War Dog Monument, is hard at work again, or I should say as ALWAYS.  My friend John who is the Author of, "Dog Tags of Courage," is such an amazing man!  He works so incredibly hard for our Nation's for legged Soldier's.

His foundation, "John Burnam Monument Foundation," has a new website, and is currently under construction.  Their objective is to provide insight into the historical and heroic legacy of the U.S. Military Working Dog Team and their contribution to the defense of our nation's freedom.

Funds for their foundation "JBMF" will be used for education and to help assist the goal of the National War Dogs Monument, Inc. to establish and maintain the monument.

Quote by John Burnam, "It is the first time in our nation's U.S. Military history that an animal, a dog, has been elevated to national monument status by law."

Please look at this website & support this amazing cause!

Adam Leigh Cann Canine Facility Dedication Ceremony 3/28/08

Photo Below:
Myself and Lcpl. Granado with Bruno

On 3/28, I had the privilege and honor of attending this amazing dedication in honor of fallen K9 Handler, Adam Leigh Cann.  The Dedication was held in Barstow, CA., where I got to meet the Leigh and Carol Cann for the very first time, which was amazing!  I can't say enough about this proud and loving family!

The ceremony was beautiful!  Their was a Major General, The Mayor, and other high ranking Marines in attendance.  My friend and Marine, Lcpl. Granado(K9 Handler)brought MWD Bruno, who was with Sgt. Cann when he was KIA in Iraq.  When the National Anthem was sung, Bruno howled the entire song which made the Ceremony all the more special.  It was a day, I will never forget for an INCREDIBLE man & Marine that will always be remembered in my heart!

I took these photos, so PLEASE DO NOT TAKE WITHOUT MY PERMISSION FIRST--THANKS

One year ago today...

Today, one year later, I want to Honor this incredible man, Marine, K9 Handler, Cpl. Dustin Jerome Lee.  He was born April 7, 1986.  Cpl. Lee was killed March 21, 2007 in Fallujah, Iraq.  He was a Marine K9 Handler attached to the 3rd Recon Battalion in Fallujah when the attack had happened.  Lex, his MWD did received injuries, but they were non life threatening.  THANKS TO ALL INVOLVED, Lex is now with the Lee family(he was Adopted on December 21, 2007), and giving lots of love to this incredible family!

Dustin, you will not be forgotten!  Dustin is a reminder to me each and everyday that life is short, and this incredible man died doing something THAT HE LOVED SO VERY MUCH; it makes me realize more and more that we should always take pride and joy in what we do, and really find something in life that we are passionate about, such as Dustin was with the Military Working Dogs.

I may not have had the privilege and honor of meeting you, but I can see now, speaking to those who did, that you touched many lives in so many ways!

RIP DENIS

On March 11, 2008, MWD Denis was KIA.  The details about Denis' death cannot be told. I want to honor this HERO!  Thank You so very much to Jim Hall, his Handler, for sending me picutres, and talking about Denis; I can feel the love you had for Denis through your words!  You must have been quite a team.  Denis will always watch over you!
Jim and Denis had served together in combat and law enforcement missions.  Jim loved Denis dearly, and referred to Denis as his "Bubba."  Jim said, " I love him so much; he's a wonderful guy, he made my life so much better."
Denis, I THANK YOU brave Soldier from the bottom of my heart for all that you did to fight for our freedom over here!

In my opinion...

Everyone has their opinion, and so I want to take the time to voice mine.
After viewing the video on YouTube(with the Marine throwing the puppy over a cliff), I'd like to voice my opinion, and please remember this is only my opinion, you are certainly entitled to yours!
I too am appalled without a doubt!  However, my anger stems way back prior to this incident.  Since the beginning of this war, we STILL have yet to see our Soldier's in the media, and all of the amazing things that they do on a daily basis!  STILL!!  Yet, the minute something horrific happens(and there have been a few things, such as a rape, etc.), but there are so many BEAUTIFUL THINGS our men and woman do, and yet we never ever hear about them.  What about the day actor Heath Ledger died?  No disrespect to him, or his family because he was an INCREDIBLE actor, but guess what, there were Soldier's who died on that same day!  Do we know their names?

Sure, we hear about them on a forwarded email with pictures of the Men and Women in the Military at work, with the kids, etc., but our Media still continues to DWELL on the negative!  Now for the story about the Marine who threw the puppy over the cliff.  My understanding from the Internet postings and blogs is that his personal address and home phone number have been displayed all over the net, giving access to anyone, and yes the family has received death threats.
Should anyone have the right to post someones personal information?
I say NO, no matter what!  I believe in the saying(I truly do)that what goes around comes around!  We need not worry because I truly believe(if the video is authentic), my thoughts are that the Marines will certainly take action.

Do you ever get a forwarded link from ANYONE that shows the Soldier's over in Iraq & Afghanistan caring for stray animals.  Well their are many, and here are two to view!  Please do, they are amazing videos!

The following link is(words can't describe what an amazing man he was) Sgt. Peter Neelsey did not make it back from Iraq, but he cared for these stray dogs, and they made it back here to the U.S.A.

Please also check out this video at:  http://media.abcnews.com/US/popup?id=4282885

I leave you with one thought, "Please don't think that one bad apple speaks for all," and please KEEP SUPPORTING OUR TROOPS--THEY ARE OVER THERE FIGHTING FOR US & OUR FREEDOM!!

A Happy Ending

(Above photo)Lex in Iraq taking action!

The following article was sent to me by John Burnam!  Thanks so much!

You may have seen this story recently on these major networks CBS, CNN, ABC, NBC:
When a mortar attack killed a 20-year old Marine Corporal Dustin Lee in Fallujah, Iraq on March 21, 2007, Lex, his military working dog, whimpering off Lee's body when help finally arrived.  Cpl. Lee and Lex had been assigned to search for roadside bombs together.

That strong bond comelled the slain Marine's family to adopt 8-year old Lex even through the military said he still had two years of service to complete.  The Lee family, from Quitman, Mississippi, lobbied the military, launched an Internet petition, and enlisted the aid of a North Carolina Congressman who took their case straight to the Marine Corps' top general.
On Wednesday, December 12, 2007, the Marine coprs finally announced Lex could go home to Cpl. Lee's family.  It is the first time in the history of the U.S. Marine Coprs that a military working dog was granted early retirement and given to the family of a fallen Marine.  Finally, on December 21, exactly nine months after the fatal attack, Lex was united with the Lee family in a nationally televised military retirement ceremony.

Lex, a German Shepard Bomb-sniffing dog, was placed back on active duty after several months in physical rehabilitation.  Lex would not be eligible for adoption until the year 2010 and the Lee family was given first priority for his adoption.
Two years was too long for the Lees to wait and in November 2007, Ms. Kelly Hooker, Director of the Military Working Dog Memorial project at Elgin Air Force Base and friend of the Lee family, contacted Mr. John Burnam, our Senior Technical Writer for Passenger Systems Program Office and founder of the National War Dogs Monument Project.  Ms. Hooker asked Mr. Burnam fo help with the early adoption.  Mr. Burnam immediately contacted Dustin's father, Mr. Jerome Lee, and together they composed letters to the Lee's state representatives and the family drafted a petition that was posted on the Internet seeking public support.

John Burnam met with N. Carolina Congressman, Mr. Walter B. Jones at his Washington D.C. office on November 13, 2007.  Rep. Jones, who is a sponser of the National War Dogs Monument Project bill, was moved to tears after reading Mr. Burnam's short story, "My Partner, Dustin" about the incidents surrounding Cpl. Lee's death from the perspective of Lex.  He telephoned Mr. Jerome Lee and offered his condolensces and assitance in the their quest to adopt Lex.  Mr. Burnam and Representative Jones, spread the word through radio interviews, print media, and TV news gathering public support for the adoption of Lex.  The Lee family's Internet petition garnered over 3,400 signatures from around the world supporting the adoption of Lex.

After a few discussions between Rep. Jones and Marine Corps Commandant, General James T. Conway, the retirement and adoption of Lex was underway.  The Marine Corps displayed tremendous compassion for the Lee family.  They dispatched a veternarian to give Lex a complete medical examination before his official discharge and conducted a military retirement ceremony honoring the service of both Lex and Corporal Dustin Lee.
John Burnam, Master Sergeant, U.S. Army(Ret), served in Vietnam as a Combat Infantryman, 7th Calvary Regiment, and as German Shepard Scout Handler, 44th Scout Dog Platoon.

"It was a very gratifying experience for me," John Burnam said, "as a Vietnam veteran German Shepard Scout Dog Handler to have helped Dustin's family adopt Lex.  It was truly the best Christmas present I could have ever asked for.  On Janurary 6, 2008, I visited with the Lee family and Lex.  The entire family is extremely grateful that their son's last best friend is now home.  I was also able to pay my respects to Cpl. Dustin J. Lee at his beautiful resting place at Stonewall Cemetary in Mississippi."
